Runner Profile
Hi, and welcome to another Runner’s Profile, by Werrington Joggers. Today we are profiling a longstanding club member.
So, whats your name, and how long have you been a member of Werrington Joggers ?
My name is Simon and I have been a member of werrington joggers for over 20 years.
When did you start running, and what was your motivation to start ?
I have always enjoyed running, even as a kid at school where I did quite well at cross country. I then did the occasional race. The Thomas cook 6 being a popular one. I got more into running on nights at work and that’s when I decided to join a running club, and living in werrington it seemed a perfect fit.
How many pairs of running shoes do you own, and which is your favourite ?
I have 4 pairs that I use regularly to run in. One pair for everyday, another for off road, another for park run and a final newest pair for racing that eventually get down graded to every day running.
What was your favourite ever run, or race ?
My favourite race and by quite some considerable distance. No pun intended, is the London marathon.
Never before have I gotten goose bumps when running. I would recommend any runner that wants to do a marathon then London is the one to do..if you can get in. Folksworth 15 is a favourite local race.
What kind of distance is your ‘happy place’ when going for a run, and what speed to you tend to run it at ?
My favourite distance is probably 10 miles, especially a Sunday run which is often not that quick but very sociable and some lovely routes too. I also enjoy a park run distance too as personally I think they help with improving my race pace, not that I have much these days.
For new runners, what would be your advice on what to avoid ?
My advice to a new runner is to go out and enjoy it and not to push too hard early on. Get used to running at a comfortable pace where you are not struggling to breathe or feel out of breath. And obviously as most people say not too much too early.
