Runner Profile

Hi, and welcome to another Runner’s Profile, by Werrington Joggers. Today we are profiling a longstanding club member.

So, whats your name, and how long have you been a member of Werrington Joggers ?

Hi, I’m Heather and I’ve been a member for Werrington Joggers for ages…I think it’s at least 10 years now!

When did you start running, and what was your motivation to start ?

My husband was a runner and I was trying my best to get fitter. I happened to be in Newcastle for The Great North Run in 2014 and spent hours watching the thousands of runners and was truly inspired by every single one of the runners who went past at all different speeds!  I made a comment to a friend that maybe one day we would be able to take part. The following year, my friends and I completed the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough and the year after, I completed the Great North Run, raising a huge amount of money for Sue Ryder, the hospice charity that had recently supported my family through exceptional end of life care for my father.  The atmosphere and comradery shown between runners was something incredible to experience and it is the reason why I still run and love being a part of the Werrington Joggers family.

How many pairs of running shoes do you own, and which is your favourite ?

I have about 4 pairs, mainly Mizuno Wave Inspire as I like the extra support it gives around the ankle, but I do have Brooks Ghost too.

What was your favourite ever run, or race ?

Ooh, hard one!  The London Marathon was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget but the Great North Run will always be my favourite and I have run it now four times. Most recently, completing it with my husband and daughter was even more special!

What kind of distance is your ‘happy place’ when going for a run, and what speed to you tend to run it at ?

I am a slower runner, someone who enjoys events for the experience of visiting new places and meeting new people while trying to keep fit.  In the past, my favourite distance was the half marathon and I’m really proud to have finished more than 40! When not training for a longer distance, I enjoy the 5 mile distance at a gentle steady jog.

For new runners, what would be your advice on what to avoid ?

Try not to compare yourself to other runners and their pace and their distance. Every run that you can do is brilliant! Be proud of what you have achieved and enjoy every moment 😊
