Carsington Water Half Marathon
24th February 2019
Organisation
This is a race organized by the good people at NICE WORK, they also do other races such as the Oundle 20, the Monsal Trail half marathon, the Tissington Trail marathon and half marathon.
The race is well organized from start to finish with race bibs being sent our way in advance of the race so there’s no need queue for registration on the day which is a personal favourite method of mine.
The Race
This half marathon & 10k race takes place around the undulating, traffic-free trails surrounding Carsington Water Reservoir. The route offers stunning views of the Lake and surrounding Peak District countryside and both races are ideal as part of a Spring marathon training schedule. The race is run on Saturday and repeated on the Sunday also.
In short, it’s a like a smaller Rutland water ½ marathon run, running on paths just like Rutland with the terrain very similar with some of the hills being slightly more of a challenge, in total there was 1183ft / 360 metres of ascent in the race.
The course profile is here
The race is about 2 hours drive from Peterborough, with the race starting at 9.30 am
There is a large car park next to the visitors centre, but you do need to pay £3 for up to 2 hours or £5 for the whole day.
The course is one lap of the reservoir starting from the visitors centre travelling in a clockwise direction (in the opposite direction to the arrows below), out towards Sheepwash car park to Horton which is an 8.5 mile loop, and then a second smaller loop running out from the visitors centre in the same clockwise direction to Wirksworth and then back to the visitors centre see the photos below
